The power and impact of artwork around the home or office can truly inspire you, can soothe the mood and often add energy to a room.

Is it possible to have too much? Or can you just hang art anywhere you want to?

The true art of hanging artwork around any room is often an interior designer’s best-kept secret but I’m going to share with you some of their secrets.

Artwork is no longer just for the wealthy; it is now available and affordable for most people. Whether you are investing in original art, canvas prints or laser prints or maybe sculptural artworks, it can really add to the ambiance of a room.

Whether it’s your personality or your value in life, art can just be the perfect translator. This lets you forge deeper connections with those who come into your home.

The key is understanding the fundamentals to see how you can get your styling to look like a professional touch and breathing life into the room. Plus, from a functional design standpoint, art acts as a focal point. Selecting the right artwork can be daunting to the untrained eye, so why not have our consultants at Colour Consultants Brisbane (ph 0413 596 131) assist you to get the artwork that works for you and your home.

The living room is the most popular space to hang artwork as that is where we spend most of our time, it’s most visible and often one of the largest rooms in the house.

The key is ensuring the work of art you choose will fit in the space provided and doesn’t get lost in the void.  One of the biggest mistakes is choosing artworks that are too small for the area.  Before selecting your artwork, measure the available space and then find artwork that does the space justice with an equal amount of white space above, below and around it.

If you have selected some artwork that is too small, then buy a cluster of 2 or 3 to fill the wall. You may want to consider adding a series or maybe create a completely different look with a feature gallery wall. Or why not consider adding a larger frame around the artwork to truly highlight the selected art. Picture framers can put your artwork within a framed box with larger borders around them to make the picture ‘pop’.

Most importantly, ensure you hang your artwork at eye level so it can be enjoyed and not be a hindrance.

“The whole culture is telling you to hurry, while the art tells you to take your time. Listen to the art.” – Junot Diaz

It’s not just artwork

Creating a theme within a room comes in many formats. Have you considered tapestries, ornate mirrors, decorative plates, hats or just shelves of fun ornaments? I’ve even seen a wall of masquerade masks that have created a real intrigue and invites conversation; it’s like there is a story behind each mask.

Selecting the right artworks for the right room is art upon itself. A child’s bedroom could have a more simplistic piece of art compared to the living room. Outdoor patio areas can also be enhanced with art in various forms, whether it is a print or metallic art or perhaps a floral art arrangement (green wall).

Remember if you are selecting a piece of art that is a little risqué, it may be better to display it in a bedroom, bathroom or your private office rather than the more commonly used living room where your mother-in-law may visit. The bathroom has become a new focal point for artwork with the increased love of bathing away in a bathtub, so looking at artwork can create a relaxing atmosphere in the room. A bathroom that inspires one to spend time in there, feels calming and peaceful needs to have cool colours or pastels, even monochrome. Think about marine art, Zen art, forests or water.

Consider the colours already within a room and create something extraordinary that will compliment the rest of your décor. Does your selection match or clash? Is it competing with your room for attention?

Still not sure how you can maximize the effects of artworks around your home. Then we need to look at your style, your décor, and budget and let’s create the home you really want. Contact me for a consultation today at Colour Consultants Brisbane 0413 596 131)
